Pumpkin Pie Spice Play Dough Recipe

It’s no secret that we LOVE making homemade play dough over at the Craftulate house. In fact I recently collected our own 20 favorite play dough recipes and variations once I realized how many we had done!

So with fall arriving and Halloween around the corner, I decided to make some super pumpkinny play dough. I used my standard recipe but triple the normal amount, and presented it in a real pumpkin!

    Here’s the recipe:

    • 1 1/2 cups AP flour
    • 1 1/2 cups cold water
    • 6 tbs salt
    • 3 tsp cream of tartar
    • 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
    • Red and yellow food dye

In a medium saucepan, mix everything apart from the dye together. Note that I’m not doing this over the heat.

Once it is all combined, add the food dye until you get to the desired color.

Over a low heat, cook the mixture until it starts clumping together. You’ll need a firm spoon and a strong hand for this can be hard work! Once it clumps together in a large ball, place it onto some wax paper.

Let it cool slightly, then give it a quick knead. It only takes 30 seconds to become smooth. Here’s all the stages:

Note: If you need more information about making your own play dough, see my helpful post that also includes a how-to video!

While the play dough is cooling further, prepare the pumpkin. I used a smaller one intended for baking. Slice the top off, then scoop out the seeds (Mmmm roasted pumpkin seeds, hello!!).

You could also scoop the flesh out but I decided it wasn’t necessary. I rinsed it all and patted it dry.

Then I pushed the play dough into the pumpkin! It was a really fun way to present it!

Note:  it is best to play with the play dough the same day that you stuff it into the pumpkin

I am a "crafty" mom of 3 who has been blogging for 10+ years. I’ve been a product reviewer/influencer on and off, but mostly just write about life and food I love. I’m a dyslexic, an extreme book addict, a total nerd, a fangirl, and a paranormal enthusiast. I am a New Englander at heart but I currently live in the MidWest. I am obsessed with the ocean, food, tech, books, anything supernatural, and although I am hopelessly sarcastic...I am a softy. Oh, and I like coffee. A LOT.
