I was provided this service free of charge as a thank you for participating by Best Buy. Positive review was not required.

A couple weeks ago I was asked to try out the Geek Squad service. While I have used them in the Best Buy store before, I had never had the Geek Squad come to my house. I try to avoid service technicians as a rule because I have had serious issues in the past. I was a little nervous but my husband was desperate for someone to come fix our problems and stop me from complaining! I was quickly at ease because our technician was awesome. Even my cat Aura, who does not like people – especially strangers, liked him. We had to apologize profusely because she jumped on his shoulders. That is usually reserved for family and friends she knows. It was wicked embarrassing but she is an awesome judge of character. I knew Mark was a good egg. So if you are wary like I am about having people come to your house, here are my top 5 reasons why you should call the Geek Squad to help with your technical needs.

Why You Need Best Buy's Geek Squad In Your Life

They are prompt and call you to let you know what time to expect them. My agent Mark called my cell phone and let me know exactly what time he would be there and he was there exactly when he said he would be. He came prepared and in his cute (soon to be retro) Geek Squad Beetle. He had booties for his shoes and was dressed in his sharp looking Geek Squad uniform. I will admit, when I entrust people in my home and with my stuff, I would like them to look employed and not homeless. It gives off the impression that they know what they are doing. I have had service men show up looking like they haven’t showered in 5 days before.

They really listen and problem solve quickly. My husband and I gave Mark the run down of the issues we were having with our internet. I like to work on my deck as soon as the weather allows. We have had a lot of problems with keeping wifi connected on the deck and in certain parts of the house. With how much my job and my kid’s schoolwork rely on the internet, it can be a problem. The kids are stuck inside pretty much all day at school. I like them to be able to go outside and do their work if they have it. Mark had quick solutions and talked us through what he thought was needed.

They actually know what they are doing. Mark has been with the Geek Squad for over 10 years. From what I have been told, the Geek Squad doesn’t have a huge turnover rate in our area. I think this is imperative. Mark has grown with the technology. He had knowledge of older systems and how they worked. If you have an older set up, live in the Chicago area and need it to be updated – I HIGHLY recommend Mark. (I will list his agent number at the end). We have been slowly updating our stuff so it wasn’t an issue, but it was awesome to have some one that knew what I was talking about when I was explaining what we had done to fix our issues.

Tasks were done that I didn’t even ask for! So when he was installing our new router, Mark noticed that my printer wasn’t set up correctly. He said very casually “I noticed your printer wasn’t set up right on your computer so I just fixed it”. What? A service provider that takes initiative and does things with out being asked? I was blown away. He also added a guest network that was closed because he knew I had teens and suggested that I set up a network so I didn’t have to give out our password. He also fixed my wifi settings so that my printer and laptop connected automatically. Since printers are my kryptonite I wanted to hug him. I can code a website but install a printer? Nope. Can’t do it.

The recommendations are completely genuine.  There was no hard sell at all. Mark didn’t try to sell us anything we didn’t need.  He used the phrase “in the future” quite a bit. He understood that we were updating a little at a time, as the budget permitted. I really liked that. He also told us to email him whenever. He would always be available for questions, concerns or emergencies. As a person who’s entire livelihood depends on the internet functioning, it feels awesome to have someone like Mark in my circle.

So to wrap up, here is what Mark fixed and/or set up for us:

Why You Need Best Buy's Geek Squad In Your Life

    • Got our 2.4Ghz network and 5Ghz network separated
    • Using the Geek Squad Netgear NightHawk router with DST I had received with our Arlo system that we had no idea what to do with, he put the Comcast Gateway into bridge mode, then plugged in the new router and
      got it setup.
    • Help fix the Sony Blue Ray player we had just purchased plugged in via Ethernet and working better. (It kept pixelizing before)

Why You Need Best Buy's Geek Squad In Your Life

    • Matched the WiFi settings so laptop and printer connected automatically.
    • Installed the printer properly on the Asus notebook and tested it.
    • Also got the DST adapter setup and working so I could use it if needed. Mark made sure it was working and could plug in anywhere.

Why You Need Best Buy's Geek Squad In Your Life

    • Setup our Guest Network as well and it is a closed network that does not have access to
      your personal network just internet.
    • Recommended I get the The HP Laserjet P1102W wireless printer for quick Black & White printing. He knew I had teens and based on my complaining that they drain my color ink suggest that printer. It runs on toner instead of ink. I didn’t even know they had those types of printers so I was psyched to learn about it.
    • The work done was also warrantied for one year.

Why You Need Best Buy's Geek Squad In Your Life

After Mark was done, he wrote up Agent Notes for us of all he did, the passwords he set up and his recommendations. He then emailed it to me in a PDF that I now have on my computer to reference. It also has his email, work hours and work cell phone if I have issues. I am super impressed. When it comes to this stuff, that is hard to do! If you live in the Chicago area and need help, call and ask for Mark (#2205). He knows what he is doing and is really knowledgeable in all things tech.

I’m a dyslexic, an extreme book addict, a total nerd, a fangirl, and a paranormal enthusiast. I am a New Englander at heart but I currently live in the MidWest. I am obsessed with the ocean, food, tech, books, anything supernatural, and although I am hopelessly sarcastic...I am a softy. Oh, and I like coffee. A LOT.
